The best gaming keyboards (https://techyassist.net/blog/gaming-keyboard/) are fast, but it's worth knowing what that speed actually means. Three factors determine how quickly your keystrokes get to your game the polling rate, the switch tech used and the type of connection. The polling rate is how often a keyboard sends data to the computer. 1,000Hz is the normal rate for gaming and Tom's Guide says it makes the budget Lemokey X1 so responsive. Some go even further: a 2024 Indian guide lists the Razer Huntsman V2 TKL with 8,000Hz polling, and Computex 2026 saw Cherry XTRFY reveal a wireless keyboard it calls the first 8K ultra-wideband model. The switch tech is crucial too. Magnetic, or 'Hall effect', switches allow you to change the distance required to actuate a key and some (like rapid trigger) reset that key the instant you lift it off, which is useful for strafing and rapid tap firing. GamesRadar says its best gaming keyboard to date, the Corsair Vanguard Pro 96, is Hall effect, but it costs more than $200. Are tiny differences important? A Reddit list of user-reported latency on popular gaming hardware puts the Asus ROG Azoth at 2.7ms, the SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 at 2.8ms and the Logitech G515 Lightspeed TKL at 3.3ms. These are not scientific lab measurements but illustrate the small differences, and as the list says casual gamers won't notice much difference over 3ms while some serious gamers will. So do you need to fork out? Competitive gamers may find a hall effect board worth the premium. For casual gaming, a good wired mechanical keyboard with a 1,000Hz polling rate is more than fast enough. Wired connections are always the best way to reduce latency and 2.4GHz wireless is the cable-less option with the smallest lag, so don't use Bluetooth for gaming.
