車禍和跌倒導致的損傷病例。 在中度和重度組中，0.6%的患者（14,944人中87人）在腦損傷后3至5年內出現腦腫瘤，這一比例高於對照組。 輕度TBI（如腦震蕩）則未發現腫瘤風險增加。 該研究旨在探索中重度TBI與惡性腫瘤的關聯性而非因果關係，未來需通過轉化醫學研究進一步確定致病機制。
研究團隊與芝加哥西北大學、加州大學三藩市分校、德克薩斯大學健康科學中心及密蘇里大學的研究人員合作。 此前針對伊拉克和阿富汗戰爭退伍軍人的研究也顯示TBI與腦腫瘤風險增加相關，但民用人群研究結果存在矛盾。 本研究採用國際疾病分類系統（ICD編碼）排除了已有腦腫瘤、良性腫瘤及放射線暴露等風險因素的受試者。
