本品长于升脾胃清阳之气，善治气虚下陷神倦发热，食少便溏，久泻脱肛，胃、肾下垂等症，常配人参、黄芪、升麻即用，如补中益气汤。
另外，
本品列出了退热感冒的常用品，常与黄芩、常山、草果同用。
【用法用量】煎服，3-10g。和解退热宜生用，疏散肝郁宜醋炙，骨蒸劳热当用鳖血拌炒。
【注意事项】柴胡性升散，古人有"柴胡劫肝阴"之说，若肝阳上亢，肝风内动，阴虚火旺及气机上逆者忌用或慎用。

（1）种子滋生。
柴胡种子栽后2年，于9月采集成熟种子晒干，脱粒，贮藏。播前半月进行解决，将柴胡种子用50微克/克的6—BA夜浸泡浸泡24小时，此后用1份种子加3份湿砂积于容器内，12天收取种子。春播或秋播饥渴，春播于3月下旬，条播按行距30cm开浅沟或穴播按23—27cm开浅穴，将解决过的种子按每亩0。 5—0。 75kg与草木灰充分拌匀，撒于沟内浅穴中，覆土、盖麦杆后浇水。 秋播于结冻前播种，株行距与春播相同。
（2）育苗移栽。

（3）田间管理。
（1）间苗定苗。当苗高10cm时间苗，如缺苗及时补苗。
（2）中耕除草施肥。联结中耕除草进行施肥。苗高10cm时，每隔10—15天施清淡肥水一次，蒙古施2—3次，当苗高33cm时，培土、并施较浓的人粪尿水。第2年，中耕除草施肥2—3次。
（3）摘蕾。于8—10月及时摘除花蕾和花薹。
（4）排灌。出苗前要保持土壤湿润，出苗后要小水勤浇，干旱时及时浇水，雨季要注意排苗。
（4）病虫防治。
柴胡的主要病虫危害有根腐病、斑枯病、根瘤线虫病、锈病、胭脂虫、小地老虎、##螬、赤条椿象等。
