根據發表在開放獲取期刊《BMJ醫學》的長期研究顯示，母親孕前BMI指數達到35或更高（重度肥胖）的兒童，其因感染住院的風險顯著增加。
研究人員指出，維持妊娠前後健康體重具有重要意義。 當前數據顯示，全球育齡女性肥胖率預計將在2030年達到23%。 由於肥胖會導致慢性炎症、免疫系統紊亂、基因表達改變以及腸道菌群異常，這些因素都可能影響胎兒的長期健康。
此前關於母親體重與兒童感染風險關聯的研究尚未達成共識。 研究人員表示，母乳餵養、分娩方式及孕期增重等可干預因素對結果的影響尚不明確。
研究團隊利用「布拉德福德出生佇列」數據，納入2007年3月至2010年12月期間在布拉德福德皇家醫院分娩的9037名女性（其中45%為巴基斯坦裔，40%為白人英國裔，37%居住在英國最貧困社區）及其子女數據，追蹤觀察至2022年10月或兒童死亡/退出研究為止。
