一項發表於《臨床腫瘤學雜誌》的研究顯示，放射治療可能導致不斷增長的兒童癌症倖存者群體中約半數的新發癌症病例。 該研究由位於加州杜阿爾特的希望之城癌症中心開展，分析了7,490名存活至50歲以上的兒童癌症倖存者的健康數據，並將其繼發性癌症、心臟病和心理健康問題發病率與兄弟姐妹及普通人群進行對比。
隨著癌症倖存者數量預計在2040年達到2,600萬，美國臨床腫瘤學會已建立8種生存者照護模式指導臨床實踐。 德克薩斯大學MD安德森癌症中心與德克薩斯兒童醫院近日獲得金德基金會1.5億美元捐贈，成立以精準腫瘤學專家威廉·帕森斯博士命名的金德兒童癌症中心，這將成為全美最大的兒科癌症中心，集住院/門診治療、藥物研發實驗室、臨床試驗和生存者照護於一體。
研究顯示：
- 兒童癌症倖存者的繼發性癌症風險比普通人群高5倍，癌症死亡風險是普通人群的5倍。
- 倖存者整體健康情況較差，55歲
