美国国家犹太健康研究中心主导的研究团队在《艾滋病杂志》今日发表的研究表明，普通感冒可能有助于抵御新冠病毒感染。发现或可部分解释为何在大多数呼吸道病毒感染中更易感的儿童，其新冠感染症状通常比成人轻。
研究团队对1,156名美国及儿童成人的HEROS伫列重复鼻拭子样本（共10,493份）进行了21种呼吸道传染病检测。同时对144名参与者的147份感染前鼻拭子，以及165名参与者在鼻病毒感染前后的391份拭子进行了核酸检测。研究人员表示："为明确病毒感染与后续新冠风险、影响抗病毒基因表达及年龄的关系，我们利用了HEROS伫列数据。该伫列从2020年5月至2021年2月对有儿童和青少年的家庭进行了新冠监测。"

数据风险显示，感染鼻病毒感染后30天内的参与者新冠感染下降48%（调整风险比0.52）。在感染已新冠的参与者中，近期鼻病毒感染使新冠病毒携带量（境内病毒数量）下降9.6倍，这表明感染程度严重下降。
引用鼻病毒感染可启动抗病毒基因表达，与新冠感染风险降低相关。
研究发现，感染前57种基因（包括24种抗病毒防御基因）的高表达水平与较低的新冠病毒载量相关。其中22种抗病毒基因的表达由鼻病毒感染触发。儿童的抗病毒基因表达水平显着高于成人，且其鼻病毒感染风险是总计的2.2倍。
研究作者强调："鼻病毒感染通过增强抗病毒基因表达，降低了感染新冠的风险。间歇性的鼻病毒感染可能强化了这种保护性基因特征，这或可解释儿童为何比成人感染新冠后症状更轻。"
