孤獨感流行病
美國約三分之一的老年人報告感到孤獨或社交孤立，這是一種廣泛的公共衛生問題，專家因其可感知的健康後果而將其描述為"流行病"。 研究表明，孤獨感會增加焦慮、抑鬱、中風、失智和過早死亡的風險。

研究人員利用歐洲健康、老齡化和退休調查的數據，分析了來自12個國家的10,217名老年人的數據（平均年齡72歲; 55%為女性）。 該研究排除了有失智或功能障礙病史的個體。 隨訪期為6年。
孤獨感被定義為感到孤獨，並使用UCLA孤獨感量表從低到高進行評分。 即時記憶通過參與者在一分鐘內盡可能多地記住10個單詞清單的能力來評估。 對於延遲回憶，參與者在5分鐘延遲後完成相同的任務。
研究使用多變數線性模型評估隨時間變化的記憶變化，調整了人口統計學因素、身體活動、健康情況、抑鬱評分、糖尿病和社會活動等協變數。
在基線時，7.7%的參與者報告高水平的孤獨感，26.8%報告平均孤獨感，65.5%報告低水準孤獨感。 即時回憶的平均得分為5.4（標準差1.6），而延遲回憶的平均得分為4.8（標準差2.0）。
風險概況
報告高水平孤獨感的人年齡更大，主要是女性，更可能患有抑鬱症、高血壓和糖尿病。
研究開始時，最孤獨的人在即時回憶（β = -0.24;95% CI，-0.33至-0.14）和延遲回憶測試（β = -0.21;95% CI，-0.33至-0.10）上的得分顯著低於低或平均孤獨感的人。
然而，研究人員指出，「孤獨感與基線記憶之間的關聯低於年齡、抑鬱、感知健康情況、身體活動或參與社交活動的影響。 "

隨著時間的推移，最孤獨的參與者的記憶以與最初報告平均或低孤獨感的同齡人相似的速度衰退，這表明孤獨感可能不是長期衰退的主要驅動因素。
記憶的急劇衰退——與孤獨感狀態無關——發生在3年至7年之間。 在調整后的模型中，年齡對初始記憶評分和隨時間變化的影響最大。
Venegas-Sanabria表示，這些發現"強調了將孤獨感作為老年人認知表現背景中的重要因素加以解決的重要性。 "
